October Message from the CEO
Six months into the Coronavirus pandemic, the Bay Area is doing comparatively well. San Francisco, in particular, has some of the lowest transmission rates per capita in the country. We’ve all done our part to control the spread of Coronavirus, and I’m especially proud of our team at Provident Credit Union. They have not only worked hard to maintain service to our members, they have been creative, resourceful and supportive. Because of their dedication, Provident Credit Union is having a record setting year. Read more to learn about all of the ways Provident employees have gone the extra mile for members and each other.
That’s a Lot of Real Estate
One billion dollars! That’s how much we expect to lend to members this year in mortgage loans. Historically low loan rates have prompted many homeowners to refinance. Others have upgraded to new, larger homes now that our living space, workspace and learning space have become one. The result has been a record setting year for Provident’s real estate department. We have the best mortgage loans and the best real estate loan officers in the Bay Area … and it shows. They say our homes are safe havens and comfort zones, and we’re especially proud we’ve been able to help members find safety and comfort during this challenging year.
New South San Jose Branch
While other financial institutions are pulling back and closing branches, Provident is investing in our communities. In September, we opened a new branch in South San Jose on Cottle Road and welcomed several new members. Opening a new branch is no easy feat, even during a so-called normal year. I’d like to recognize the big team who helped make this new branch happen. Their hard work and dedication to serving members, every single day, while also completing big projects, no matter the challenge, is greatly appreciated!
Zelle: Money on the Go Made Easy
Provident members will soon join more than 100 million Americans who are able to send and receive money using Zelle through Provident’s mobile banking app. Unlike other money transfer services that require a middleman, Zelle moves money directly between each individual’s bank account within minutes. It’s fast, safe and easy! We’ll share more about Zelle as the launch date for our mobile app approaches later this year.
Pandemic Safety Update
When it comes to limiting the spread of Coronavirus, we’ve gone beyond the CDC recommendations and have invested in additional safety measures in our branches and headquarters building. These improvements will protect our staff and members from this pandemic, and those that may arise in the future.
At our branches, we recently completed the following:
- Installed hands-free soap dispensers in branch restrooms and kitchen areas. We are also surveying branches for locations that require hands-free faucets and handles.
- Installed new NPBI (Needlepoint Bipolar Ionization) to HVAC systems in 15 locations, and have units on order for the remaining 6 branches.
- Ordered custom teller line dividers to provide protection not only between a member and an employee during a transaction, but also between teller lines on both sides of the counter.
- Identified which locations require new cleanable lobby chairs.
Many of our headquarters employees are still working from home, but we have been busy making improvements in preparation for their return, including the installation of a UV air purifying system, touchless faucets, toilets and lighting fixtures, acrylic panels to separate work stations, and directional arrows in hallways and stairwells to help employees keep a safe distance. We will also soon install automatic, hands-free doors for our ground floor entrance. Provident has also invested in maintaining a three months’ supply of sanitizers, cleaning products and protective gear that will keep our locations open in the event of a disease flare up or new pathogen.
The Bay Area has proven it is among the best in helping contain the spread of Coronavirus. We embrace this safety-first mindset and are proud to provide transparency when it comes to our safety measures.
NEW: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Provident
When it comes to creating change, the best place to start is at home. That’s why Provident created a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee with the goal of creating an inclusive environment in which all members and employees are accepted, appreciated, respected and valued.
How can we get there? Together, we are better! We will double down on our existing organizational values. We will listen to diverse perspectives, continue to challenge ourselves to get better, and do what’s right for each other. I’m proud of the diverse and inclusive culture we have built and I’m especially proud that our employees want to make it even better for their co-workers and our members.
